Stillhead B-Word 5-Year

46% ABV - British Columbia, Canada

Nose: Opens with heaps of vanilla and spice, with oak and caramel in tow.

Taste: Vanilla with citrus and oak, spices, and sweet fruit leading into the finish.

Finish: Marachino cherry, caramel, butterscotch, and charred oak for miles.

This lovely whisky was gifted to me at my birthday party—liquor makes a great gift for adults! We opened it right away and had a pour, but it has been so long since then As I wrote this review, it was as if I had re-discovered it!

B-word… it’s true to the name. It is a Bouron-style whisky, and a good one at that! I think cask strength shines for this one—howver, the batch release (this bottle) is in the same league as Wild Turkey 101 and Evan Williams Bottled in Bond.

If you ever get the opportunity to visit the Stillhead distillery in Duncan, BC, then it is worth the stop. We visited recently to check out the new lounge that had opened up. (They also have tasty cocktails!) The staff treated us very well and we tried many past and present Stillhead whiskies. Some barrels are stored right there at the distillery, so it’s cool to see some of the casks they have aging (...I am really looking forward to the Tokaji release!)

Details: Bourbon-style mash bill of BC corn/rye/malt aged for 5 years in new charred oak barrels.

Tasting Notes (Official): On the nose: sweet clover and brown sugar, on the palate, toasted marshmallow, finishing with baking spices.

Tasted 14 April 2024. (Posted 15 April 2024.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
