Shelter Point 10-Year Prohibition

56.9% ABV - British Columbia, Canada

Nose: Dense smoke from a fresh campfire, petrichor, oil and light fruits.

Taste: Spiced peat, damp wood, and nondescript fruits.

Finish: Leathery peat, wood smoke, cedar wood, and spices.

I have got to lead with "Wow!"... I’ve had a few bottles of Shelter Point in my possession, including another peated one named Smoke Point that was finished in ex-Laphroaig casks, but this is something else. It has some really unique woody / campfire wood / burning wood aromas that I can’t recall tasting in many other whiskies.

The alcohol at cask strength isn’t as detectable as it is in the standard 10-Year Cask Strength release. There is a feeling of a greater harmony of the elements in this whisky. I wonder if this particular cask had been deemed a "honey cask"; a cask that is destined to be released as a single cask for the enjoyment and showcasing the style.

I split this bottle with a friend, so I am actually down to my last 4 ounces! I have already passed the bottle back to him for its final days but I’ve decanted the last of my share into a Boston round. I’ll miss it when it’s gone, but it’s been great knowing it.

Details: A single cask aged in ex-bourbon and finished in an ex-Islay cask. (It’s a well known secret that it is an ex-Ardbeg cask.)

Tasting Notes (Official): With a nose led by notes of creamy vanilla with a hint of medicinal peat and a palate that features a blend of spice, peat and caramel, that finishes with a delicious combination of creamy pudding, iodine and campfire. Our 3rd 10-Year-Old Single Malt expression whisky is designed to be shared and savored.

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
