Penderyn Icons of Wales No. 7 Rhiannon

46% ABV - Wales

Nose: Fruits, fresh plum and honeyed tea, with sherry spices.

Taste: Orchard fruits, apricot, plum, cranberry, spices and oak.

Finish: Soft fruits and spices, with vanilla, tannins, and a slight malty character.

This bottle of Penderyn was gifted to me by one of my best friends for being in his wedding party. He gave each of the groomsmen this fine whisky. It’s quite popular with those I am able to share it with—Penderyn isn’t a big brand around here, it’s a Welsh whisky, and comes in a black bottle with black and white artwork covering most of the label (i.e. it is a wee bit "showy".)

I have it sitting on my bottom shelf right now (that’s not to imply that it’s a bottom-shelf whisky) and, since it’s not front and center, it has only been very slowly draining away. I opened this on the same day we were gifted it (as we were getting our suits on for the ceremony last summer) and there is probably about half remaining. It’s really hard to see exactly how much is left on account of the black bottle… it’s not like some Highland Park offerings where you are able to shine a light through; this bottle is opaque!

Details: Sherrywood Grand Cru Finish.

Tasting Notes (Official): Nose: Spicy sweetness with the hint of vanilla, oak tannins, red berries, blackcurrants, hazelnuts, pears, sultanas and sweet marzipan. Taste: Smooth velvety sweetness, creamy caramel, figs, red berries, delicate frangipane, chocolate ganache and a touch of coffee. Finish: Sweet and dry with long lingering oak tannins.

Tasted 3 December 2023. (Posted 8 February 2024.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
