Odd Society Spirits Bourbon Style (Powell Brewery Collaboration)

46% ABV - British Columbia, Canada

Nose: It surprised me with a bourbon-y–scotch beginning. Light caramels, grain sweetness, and a hint of apples. In the background there are powdered sweets, fruits, and some spices.

Taste: Sweet grasses, apples, honey, and unripe nectarine.

Finish: I’m wondering if grass is the right descriptor but it’s coming in here again—dry, straw grass. It’s a relatively quick finish with bits of fruit and grain sweetness lasting.

Well, I’m not too surprised that this bottle didn’t last long—one part being half bottle sized (375mL) and one part being quite delicious! This is a Canadian whisky bottled by Odd Society Spirits… though it has a twist of collaboration to it. Powell Brewing is no more than a 5-minute walk from Odd Society and these two got together for this creation. (As an aside, Powell Brewing is one of my favourite breweries in Vancouver, BC.)

Odd Society partnered up with a few other breweries to release a series of these collaborations. I wasn’t able to try them all (or buy them all!) though this one sounded the most promising to my taste preferences, so I took the calculated chance. The details behind this bottling are copied below.

Details (Official) The fourth release of [Odd Society’s] brewery collaboration whiskies. Powell Bourbon-Style Whisky was made in collaboration with our good friends at Powell Brewery, located just down the road. This is our first "bourbon" and was inspired by Powell’s experimental corn California common. We can’t technically call it bourbon because it wasn’t made in the US but the mash bill is 75% corn, 20% rye, and 5% malted barley. The mash was soured overnight at the brewery (A special thanks to Okanagan Spirits for helping us source BC-grown corn suitable for distilling), and the whisky was aged for three years in a 200 litre brand new American white oak barrel at the distillery. Rich and smooth, with typical corn sweetness, this whisky is a very special bourbon-style treat!

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
