Odd Society Spirits Boneyard (Batch 1, 2021)

46% ABV - British Columbia, Canada

Nose: There is a lot going on here: baking spices—nutmeg, red fruit jam, caramel corn, and tiny bit of ..wet pavement and chocolate malt?

Taste: That chocolate malt is carrying through here and I’m going to roll with that as a tasting note. It’s accompanied by fruits and baking spices.

Finish: Mostly spices followed up with some kind of blended fruit sweetness. Medium length.

This bottle of Odd Society Spirits Boneyard has a very, very interesting story! They have taken a sampling of each bottling for the past 7 years!(!!!) Absolutely amazing flavours given that fact. I feel like if I were in charge of the blending and proportions this wouldn’t have been anything better than a King’s Cup.

The whisky has traces of rye, single malt, and even maple-finished whisky (yum!) It was aged in a single cask using the Solera method. It has "Batch 001" on the bottle which makes me hopeful that they will continue to periodically release this one—if the Solera method is what they are using, then that suggests that "Batch 002" will contain some of this liquid before me!

Details: Limited to 150 bottles. A portion of every bottling session since 2016 was saved and then blended in a single cask.

Tasted 04 November 2021. (Posted 10 November 2022.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
