Loch Lomond 1995 Old Particular 25-Year Single Grain

51.7% ABV - Highlands, Scotland

Nose: Butterscotch, butterscotch, and butter.. and scotch. Biscuits, raw honey and the heat of ginger.

Taste: The butterscotch really comes through with added layers of fruits. Roasted sunflower and shortbread.

Finish: The finish lasts for days. The flavour hits a crescendo with dried orange, floral, and powdered sweets.

This is one of my favourite whiskies—which really surprised me because it is not a moderate to heavily peated, ex-Sherry matured (or finished!) Islay single malt. This here is a single grain whisky… there is no statement regarding what grain, but it surely isn’t malted barley!

The price was right for a 25-Year Scotch whisky, especially when compared to anything of similar age available in this part of Canada. I’ve been quite excited to share this whisky with others—it is still on shelves at the time I type this! I recently picked up one to store away for later… this whisky won’t appreciate in value much, but my appreciation for it will not wain. A remarkable malt from the independent bottler, Douglais Laing.

Details: Refill hogshead. One of 258 bottles. Distilled November 1995, Bottled June 2021. Bottled for BC Liquor Stores 100th Anniversary. DL 14946.

Tasting Notes (Official): Anticipate caramel & cereal with sugared almonds & buttermilk pancakes.

Tasted 04 July 2022. (Posted 08 January 2023.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
