Laphroaig 2013 Càrn Mòr Williamson 9-Year

47.5% ABV - Islay, Scotland

Nose: Grilled tropical fruits, peat smoke, and ash are dominant. Notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, sea salt and rose petals. Lots going on!

Taste: Intense smokiness with peppered fruits and charred meat on a barbecue.

Finish: White pepper and spices atop billowing smoke and candied fruits.

What a great whisky! I tasted this in a blind whisky tasting at The Strath Liquor Store and made an on-the-spot decision to buy two—not something that I often do. (They were still available on The Strath’s website while I was typing out this review.) I am only about one-third through this bottle. Every time I pour a dram I wonder how I managed to wait so long since the last…

This is a great value whisky (it’s under $200 CAD) and it displays a neat profile of Laphroaig that strays a bit from the distillery character. I was not confident in that blind tasting that this was a Laphroaig whisky. I was 100% confident that it was delicious though!

Details: Number of Bottles: 1798. Bottled in 2023. Cask Type: Hogshead. Strictly Limited series by Càrn Mòr. (A tiny, extra detail is that the label on the bottle does name the Laphroaig distillery—sometimes they don’t!)

Tasting Notes (Official): Pungent peat smoke, smoked kippers, sea salt and ground black pepper.

Tasted 11 June 2024. (Posted 4 October 2024.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
