Kirkland Islay Single Malt

50% ABV - Islay, Scotland

Nose: Fairly smoky, with diesel qualities of peat, creosote, slight hints of polish, sour citrus or marmalade, and sweet vanilla.

Taste: There is lots of peat upfront with burning wood (cedar or pine), and that is followed by ash and more sweetness—it is quite easy drinking.

Finish: Lasting peat, with pepper and nondescript fruits.

This is one of the better valued bottles that I’ve had! Costco really does source and bottle some great stuff—Alexander Murrary gets the true credit as the bottler, I suppose. Kirkland branded alcohol products are not available in British Columbia, but the province-next-door Alberta carries these. I’d highly recommend this for whisky drinkers of all experiences—whether you are starting out or not. It’s a great "daily dram", probably could standup well in cocktails, and for the price you wouldn’t have to be as worried about the fill level decreasing… if the opportunity arises, I would consider buying a replacement when this one is gone!

There is no indication which distillery this single malt is from and my best guess is Caol Ila, and that appears to be the popular opinion. I’d be happy to be wrong on this, but for the volume that Costco stores would need to keep this stocked regularly and across the country, there aren’t many distilleries who can provide that volume.

Tasting Notes (Official): This Kirkland Signature Islay Single Malt is a whisky that is golden brown in color, with aromas of creamy cereals with balanced peat characteristics. It is full-bodied with notes of salted caramel and cigar smoke. These flavors linger on the palate and give way to a long, warming, peaty finish.

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
