49% ABV - Ontario, Canada
Nose: It begins with some elements of rye flavour, grasses, roasted nuts, nutmeg, and light bread characteristics. Hints of light honey and florals.
Taste: Upfront rye and spices, with sweet notes, light dried fruits, butterscotch, and fresh wood. Very small amounts of citrus, and a creamy mouthfeel.
Finish: Ending with spices, lasting sweetness, dry fruits, and vanilla.
This represents a fine expression of Canadian whisky from the 2nd Northern Border Collection – the annual rare whisky release from Corby Spirit and Wine. I had the opportunity to taste (most) whiskies from last year, but notably not the Gooderham & Worts Three Grain Little Trinity 17! Having now tasted the Gooderham & Worts Eleven Souls this year, it would be amazing to find a dram available of the Little Trinity – I think I would really enjoy it. So of the portfolio for this year, my favourites were the J.P. Wisers 35 and Lot 40 11 Year Cask Strength, but we selected this bottle as it represented a missing flavour from our current collection.
I do enjoy rye-forward bourbons and appreciate the blending art that makes the Canadian whisky category, but my taste preferences cause me to infrequently seek out these types of flavours. However, I’m glad this one is in the growing whisky library of our household. It’s a great example of sippable Canadian whisky and for sure one to share!
