Glenmorangie 10-Year The Original

40% ABV - Highlands, Scotland

Nose: Sweet fruits and baked apple pie with a dusting of cinnamon. Light spices, citrus, and vanilla. Touch of oak.

Taste: Ripe orchard fruits, green grapes, vanilla, honey, and spices. Slight amount of floral and fresh cut grass in the background.

Finish: Soft fruits, oak and spices.

This is the third bottle of the Glenmorangie 10-year that I have bought but it’s the first time that I am reviewing it. I feel like it has become a staple on my shelf. It’s an easy one to select when I’m in the mood for something light and refreshing, it’s a great bottle to introduce people to whisky with, and it’s fairly affordable for an age statement on a single malt scotch.

Although it’s my third bottle, it’s the first one I have purchased (of any Glenmorangie) with the new labelling that really divides the name up into GLEN, MO, RAN, and GIE. It really does stand out compared to other bottles now and the many expressions do look nice all lined up, but I can’t but feel they are marketing a mispronounciation of the distillery name. I was taught it should be pronounced glen-morng-ee… kind of like you are saying "orange-y". Perhaps if I visit the distillery one day I can set it straight. Yes, I should book my tickets to Scotland right now!

Details: Matured for 10 years in first- and second-fill ex-Bourbon casks.

Tasting Notes (Official): Smooth, creamy and luscious with notes of orange, honey, vanilla and peach.

Tasted 30 November 2023. (Posted 8 February 2024.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
