George Dickel 13-Year Bottled in Bond

50% ABV - Tennessee, United States

Nose: Sharp notes of sweet caramel covered fruit, leather, honey, vanilla, oak, and spices. Very typical bourbon notes, generally speaking.

Taste: A lot of the same notes present, but there is a citrus/cherry/something syrup coming through.

Finish: Ends with a little bit of a kick… vanilla, wood, and spices to last.

If I recall the first time I tried a George Dickel whisky… I think it was around my birthday and we had gone out for dinner and drinks at a local whisky bar. The whisky bar most people knew about. Anyway, I remember so much pickle from that glass and I haven’t had any since. That is going on 5-6 years ago! I’ll dive into the whisky now… (the notes you might have already read above).

(And now that I’ve tasted it…) Overall, the George Dickel Bottled in Bond is "not too bad." I don’t drink bourbon all that often, so forgive me if the following offends you, but I find it similar to Knob Creek in general flavour profile. I wrote my tasting notes before I read the "official" notes (see below) and now the power of suggestion is totally working after reading pecan. I can definitely see that in the nose and arrival on the palate.

We recently had a house party (a small gathering) and the heel of this bottle was left by one our friends—what a gentleman. I don’t think that I’d buy a bottle, but no complaints about having a couple dram from it!

Details: Distilling Season: Spring 2007. "Release No. 3" from 2021. Mashbill: 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley.

Tasting Notes (Official): Pecan, maple syrup, and dried apple.

Tasted 24 November 2023. (Posted 8 February 2024.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
