Forty Creek Foxheart

40% ABV - Ontario, Canada

Nose: The aromas of rum come swirling out of the glass. Demerara sugar, banana, spices, and fruits.

Taste: It’s more of a conflict between whisky and rum here—but whisky punches through on the taste. Light florals, ripe fruit, butterscotch, copper, honey, and spices.

Finish: Light fruits fade, plantain, and spices.

When it comes to some things in life, I consider myself really lucky—I won this bottle of whisky in a random draw! (How is that for an unbiased review..!)

Forty Creek Foxheart is one of the bottles that flexes the "Canadian rule" when it comes to whisky; Canadian whisky can contain up to 1/11th of another distilled spirit and still be labelled and marketed as whisky. This expression has taken 9.09% 12-Year Caribbean rum and blended it with a standard (blend) of Canadian grains. I’m not sure what the recipe for standard Forty Creek is, but I assume a decently high blend of corn, rye and barley whiskies.

This one is interesting, but overall I don’t think it’s for me. I scored it quite high on the taste (85) for how I felt about other components, and that contributed to my surprise when it totalled above the 70s on my rating scale—click around below to learn more about that!

Details: "Premium Whisky infused with Aged (12-Year) Caribbean Rum".

Tasting Notes (Official): Aromas: Vanilla and oak with hints of stewed fruits and Banana. Flavour: Creamy with sweet tropical fruit, hints of molasses and lingering peppery spices, then cream Sherry, dark fruits and barrel tones. Finish: Multi-layered, lush and very approachable.

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
