Forty Creek Copper Bold

43% ABV - Ontario, Canada

Nose: Wheat fields, caramel, cooked rice, spices, and vanilla. Tiniest hints of lemon wood polish.

Taste: Caramel and butterscotch with creamed wheat, taffy, and oak.

Finish: Vanilla, soft fruits, lemon, and spices.

Like a couple of other Forty Creek whiskies that I have reviewed… this was a gift! It was a wonderful surprise and bonus from attending a Trenny & C event featuring Forty Creek Chris. (You can check them out on the socials if you’d like.) The label on this bottle is a newer design and I think it is a big improvement from the previous look. This whisky had previously been named Copper Pot but with the new labels it is sold as Copper Bold—it contains the same juice inside.

Quite a versatile whisky; I think that this is fine for sipping and for mixing (in a spirit-forward cocktail). I think if you are looking for a base whisky, this is a great one to have on the shelf. It is very affordable at $30 CAD before taxes—a steal compared to other whiskies.

Details (Official): Leveraging the same Barrel Select technique of blending individually aged corn, rye, and barley whiskies, Copper Bold takes it one step further with extra oak ageing and a higher proof than many other Canadian Whiskies.

Tasting Notes (Official): Bold aromas of toffee, nuts and spice, with a long, sensual finish.

Tasted 12 June 2024. (Posted 4 October 2024.)

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
