Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Private Barrel

64.5% ABV - Kentucky, United States

Nose: A heavy blend of raisins, fresh wood, spices, and caramel.

Taste: Dried cherries, oranges, spices—including clove, and aged wood.

Finish: Sweet fruits, citrus, pepper, roasted almond, and drying oak.

I’m drinking this Elijah Craig Barrel Proof right after having sipped on Noah’s Mill Bourbon, and I must say that colour of Elijah Craig is strikingly darker! That makes me think Noah’s Mill doesn’t have nearly the age of 9-years that this Private Barrel for BC Liquore Stores has either. But, the important thing is: they both taste like good whiskey.

This bottle gives a rush of flavour—I think that it’s a gem! The first Barrel Proof that I had, Batch C917, was tasted at the source: Heaven Hill Distillery. That was late March in 2018… five-and-a-half years ago! This whiskey is not very available in Canada, so patience is key between the opportunities of buying a bottle.

A lovely bottle, it has great design, and it’s one to keep stocked but not one to hoard.

Details: Hand-selected for BC Liquor Stores. Barrel Serial #6262702. Non-chill filtered.

Tasting Notes (BC Liquor Stores): Aromas of butterscotch, toffee and candied corn abound. There are mocha notes with a hint of marzipan and cherry on the palate that marry beautifully with the vanilla and sweet toffee flavours. The finish starts out sweet but ends with a nice toasty dryness that lingers.

Tasted 2 November 2023. (Posted 9 December 2023.)

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
