Deanston 10-Year Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Finish

46.3% ABV - Highlands, Scotland

Nose: Yogurt covered raisins, dry fruits, citrus, malted grain, and a hint of strawberry shortcake and petrichor or lightly charred wood.

Taste: The red wine influence brings spicy fruits, oranges, plum, and raspberry. Decently complex! Malted notes and honey-caramel are in behind it all.

Finish: Fruits, spices, oak, and a caramel-marshmallow sweetness.

After a mightily disappointing realization that my luggage did not make it on the same flight to London, England with me, as I headed toward the London Underground—the "Tube"—there was a small duty free outside of the luggage collection area where this was selling for £35 (and I thought that was a great price!) I interpreted that as a my luck instantly turning around…

I love purchasing a bottle in the country that I am travelling to—trying to find something that I normally wouldn’t be able to get—and then taking that bottle it around on the trip, drinking and it enjoying it with my wife and our friends that we meet.

We carried this bottle from London to Brussels, to Amsterdam, to Bonn (Germany… and back home to BC, Canada… where there is roughly one third to one quarter remaining as I write this.

It’s really interesting to taste this one right after sipping on the Deanston 12-Year. I can tell it has the same DNA, but it really has some unique flavours!

From what I could find out on Whiskybase.com, this travel retail exclusive was first introduced around 2018. That little kiosk of a duty free in the London Heathrow airport is the only location that I have seen it.

Details: Non-chill filtered.

Tasting Notes (Official): Open our new travel exclusive, the Deanston Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Finish, and let the unique combination of casks and maturation style, take you on a journey of rich grape, red wine, and Deaston’s signature scents of sweet honey and toffee. Next, relish in notes of rick dark chocolate, and a sweet and spicy, long and lingering finish, that brings a sip of this 10 year old single malt to a satisfying end.

Detailed Rating Information...

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
