Clynelish 2010 Single Malts of Scotland 10-Year

56.8% ABV - Highlands, Scotland

Nose: Soft, buttery aromas. Raw honey, biscuit, vanilla, and very light spices.

Taste: Sweet fruits, mango, tropical fruits, hard candies.

Finish: Fresh flowers, vanilla, light orchard fruits, wood grain and spices. Medium-long.

This fine Clynelish was aged for 10 years and a day! Knowing exactly how many days it sat in a cask often has me wondering at what time interval do they check casks—had this been unchecked for months until the schedule for this cask came along? Or did they review it for a few weeks to determine that now is the time to bottle it? But I digress…

I was happy to get this bottle of whisky—selected by the Vancouver chapter of the Companions of the Quaich (and/or the Calgary chapter?)—and I was happy to get it after it had initially "sold out". It’s not often that I regret passing on any opportunity to buy a bottle. Anyway, one of my friends decided they didn’t want to open this bottle, and they had bought it through the club before they were all gone, so I was happy to pay the tariff to him!

This independently bottled Clynelish is a great example of their house style in a cask strength expression. Great value at approximately $150 CAD.

Details: ex-Bourbon Barrel. Cask 700048. Distilled 29.01.2020, Bottled 30.01.2020. 232 bottles. Selected by Companions of the Quaich.

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
