Bladnoch 19-Year PX Sherry Cask Matured

46.7% ABV - Lowlands, Scotland

Nose: Rich notes of prune and dark raisin, layered with classic sherry spices. There’s a touch of liquorice and old wood, rounded off with caramelized sugar.

Taste: A bold, dark fruit punch, with deep sherry flavours—almost like the rich sediment at the bottom of a sherry bottle.

Finish: Reminds me of a freshly baked fruit pie—dark cherry and plum, with a touch of wood, spice, and roasted nuts.

I think I’ve started a new tradition! I attended the Victoria Whisky Festival in early 2024, and this was my favourite whisky of the weekend (though to be fair, it was also the only one I found for sale). It’s a bit pricier than your average single malt, but I believe it offers excellent value for the depth of flavours.

This is a fantastic whisky and comes highly recommended. I can easily see this becoming a mainstay on my shelf. It’s a more affordable alternative to Macallan, especially considering the rising prices of some of those Gordon & MacPhail releases in recent years.

One of the entirely unnecessary—but undeniably cool—features of this Bladnoch 19-Year is its heavy, luxurious stopper. It adds a sense of elegance, and while it’s clearly a marketing tactic, I must admit… they’ve got me there!

Note: I decided to experiment with GPT-4o to help refine this review after training it with some of my previous ones.

Details: 2023 Release.

Tasting Notes (Official): Nose: Dark liquorice sticks and aged oak with a floral background. Palate: Liquorice sticks with dried apricots, almonds and nutmeg. Finish: Long with a dry sweetness.

Tasted 26 September 2024. (Posted 4 October 2024.)

90+: Fantastic whisky; highly recommended.
My favourite whiskies – I might have more than one bottle if the price is right and the supply is limited! The higher values in this range will reflect a stronger balance and consistency between components.
85-89: Great whisky; recommended.
Whiskies that tick the flavour boxes and you'll likely hear about these from me. An easy decision to order at a bar/restaurant and one to consider buying a bottle of.
80-84: Very good whisky; recommended, but still consider trying before you buy.
Most of these whiskies I was really happy to have the opportunity to taste, but, apart from a dram here and there, I don’t think I would buy a bottle.
75-79: Good whisky; consider trying before you buy.
These are whiskies that I did enjoy drinking, but likely would reach for another bottle or select something different to order.
65-74: Average; consider trying before you buy, but not recommended.
There is nothing that stood out about this whisky and I might be inclined to mix it with soda or in a cocktail, instead of trying to enjoy its own flavours.
50-64: Bad; not recommended.
I didn’t like this and would sooner pass on another opportunity and order a beer instead than have it again… but never say never.
