60% ABV - India
Nose: A red fruit punch of cherries, plums, and spices. Orange citrus, cinnamon, and smoke building on the horizon.
Taste: Spiced dry fruits, orange, chocolate, tree bark, fruit leather, and a roaring stove fire.
Finish: Spices, mulled wine, slightly drying from oak, with the background of an ashy fire.
Amrut has been selling their single malt since 2004—not geologic time like some of the better-known Scottish distilleries! We’re not going to see a 25-year old on the market any time soon either, as the conditions for ageing whisky in Bengaluru, India are much more intense because of the heat. The angel’s take a much heftier tariff by comparison to Scotch whisky.
This bottling of Amrut makes me draw a comparison to the grittiness of Ledaig. Lots of punchy flavour, is not overly complex, and is fairly consistent in the progression from nose to finish. I love how it’s bottled at 60% ABV so that you can play with adding water to it… not that it needs it, necessarily!
At the time of this review, The Strath Liquor Store still had some stock available.
